Our climbers are waking up to their last day on the mountain. They’ll have their last breakfast in the mess tent and then start their trek. They’ll descend through the rainforest past towering trees and lush ferns to a hot lunch at Mweka Gate – where they’ll end their adventure on Mount Kilimanjaro.

Day Two of our epic Kilimanjaro Adventure!
BECAUSE TOMORROW WE CLIMB!
Today…we had training from our guides and Drew about the climb. They talked about going slowly…together. In Swahili…our guides and porters will say to us often…“Polay, Polay, Pemoja, Pemoja”
That’s “slowly, slowly, together, together”
Today marks the beginning of an incredible journey! Everyone has arrived safely at Mount Meru Hotel in Arusha, Tanzania. Similar to Mount Kilimanjaro, which comprises of three volcano cones, Mount Meru is also a dormant volcano and stands at 14,968 ft. Let’s hope our climbers have good weather on Mount Kilimanjaro
Some reflections on our Kilimanjaro Climb…
My husband wants to throw me a “victory party” for reaching the summit of Kilimanjaro. Of course I am touched by this but I am clear that this was not my victory…

I just realized the date. July 4th. A day that celebrates the freedom that others fought to give us. The peak of Kilimanjaro is called Uhuru peak, which is the Swahili word for freedom. Sometimes freedom is given and sometimes freedom is earned, but it’s never easy.

“Early to bed, early to rise, Fish like hell, and make up lies”. This little sonnet greets everyone who uses our powder room off the front entry hall at Camp Lakemont, our square logged mountain home in North Georgia. A wooden plaque souvenir picked up at a flea market years ago it captures the spirit of the day ahead - well at least the first part
Friday morning began early for our group, as our off-fishing day would be spent hiking up into the Tetons on one of their many iconic trails into the rugged backcountry. After breakfast, our group provisioned up, packed lunches(and a few beers to celebrate our hopeful ascent) and headed out into Grand Teton National Park. The

“May we never lose our wonder, wide eyed and mystified, may we be just like a child, staring at the beauty of our King.” I had these lyrics from the song “Wonder” by Bethel Music stuck in my head most of the day. Every part of today begged for child like joy and excitement. Waking up in Aguas Calientes, making our way up to

Last night was our first night in Cusco. The Belmond hotel Monasterio is magnificent! We awoke this morning and met for our community breakfast. Yet another feast. After last nights dinner and this morning’s breakfast and lunch, I don’t think I’m going to lose weight on this trip. On the contrary. After breakfast we took a short
Our first day started with a pretty active sequence of events. For most of us, having landed from our first flight late the other night, we prepared to board our flight to Cusco with little more than 5:30 hours of sleep. After landing, we were greeted by David and Hollman, along with a group of Belmont’s staff, to collect us for the

We began together at Mount Meru hotel, conquered Mount Kilimanjaro and hiked down together, and today we ended our trek - you guessed it - together. We ended as we began - choosing the courage to share both laughter and the deeper parts of our hearts with one another, but not before a bit of physical and mental recovery.

One Kili climb, two flights and three custom stops later – we arrived in an oasis away from the madness. Welcomed with open arms, singing and an impromptu African drum circle, we all let out sighs of relief and awe over what the beauty of the Royal Livingstone Hotel had to offer. Let the much needed rest and relaxation
I think I speak for everyone when I say that we all had the greatest night’s sleep we could have ever imagined after coming off Mt. Kilimanjaro. Although the next morning some of us woke up with an African stomach bug, that didn’t keep us from devouring a delicious buffet breakfast at the hotel while we reminisced about the
Everyone experiences the mountain in their own unique way. Here is a glimpse into one climbers experience, Robert Thrasher, and how the climb was about more than, well, the climb… Despacito – “Pole pole” (or “slowly”) was a common refrain over the seven days on the mountain. I’d never really hiked slowly. My wife and I both are more about

We’ve been there – stepping off a plane after a long-haul flight and feeling like you need to eat a hot meal, take a shower, and sleep for 8,973,429,723 hours. The secret to staying fresh even after all of those movies and questionable food is…
Today, after my first night on Mount Kilimanjaro, I woke up to our guide whistling How Great Thou Art. I stepped out of my tent with the Creator on my heart and as I did, the sun crested over the mountains. Dew crowned the earth with jewels and yellowed heather cloaked it with gold. The Creator was meeting...
