Frequently asked questions

What types of trips can I take?

BEYOND offers trips to North America, South America, and Africa. Trips include climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, cruising the Zambezi River, seeing Machu Picchu, and fly fishing in Grand Teton National Park. We offer the opportunity to connect with a local nonprofit on every trip. If you’d like to connect with a certain nonprofit, let us know and we’ll make it happen.

Is BEYOND only open to certain ages?

BEYOND welcomes all ages. There’s no age minimum or maximum, but we ask that you consider the physical requirement for your trip and prepare for it. Travelers under the age of 18 must travel with a guardian.

What if I have no previous experience like this? No experience?

No problem! Anyone, regardless of experience, can travel with us.

Safety is our top priority. We’ve worked alongside trusted partners for over a decade to ensure that you have a safe experience. We tailor our trips to your needs and prepare for all contingencies.

How safe are these trips?

We led our first trip up Kilimanjaro in 2005 and have been creating trips of a lifetime ever since.

How long have you been leading these trips?

While we do organize open trips, we also offer private trips for families, organizations or other private groups. On our open trips, you’ll have the opportunity to make new friends and share extraordinary experiences together. Many people on our open trips come home with lifelong bonds with their new friends.

Are trips private groups? Or will I be with people I don’t know?

Open trips are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. We suggest booking your trip one year to six months in advance to ensure availability. This ensures that you get the best flight itinerary and have enough time to gather equipment. We do occasionally have last minute openings, so never hesitate to reach out to us!

How far in advance do I need to book my trip?

Trips range from 7 days to 15 days with extensions. For example, your trip will be shorter if you only book a safari than if you book a safari and Mount Kilimanjaro climb.

How long are the trips?

In general, a trip with BEYOND includes everything except flights to and from your destination country, visas, and tips for guides. However, this varies slightly from trip to trip. Contact us to find out more about a specific trip.

What’s covered in the cost of a Beyond experience? What will I have to purchase separately?

No. You'll need to book your flight on your own, but our expert travel agents are available to help you choose the best flight itinerary.

Is airfare included in my payment?

The equipment you need depends on your trip. You’ll get a complete packing list – tried and tested by us – when you book your trip. More details and an opportunity for Q&A on gear will be available on the pre-trip information calls.

What equipment do I need?

BEYOND provides a full range of accommodation from camping in a tent to sleeping in luxury hotels.

Where will I sleep?

During your trip, we’ll provide breakfast, lunch, and dinner. However, you may bring food from home if you’d like.

What kind of food will I eat? Can I bring my own?

If you have any dietary constraints, please let us know and we’ll accommodate them.

What if I have dietary constraints?

Yes, you'll have the opportunity to shower throughout your trip. Laundry services are available at most hotels. You’ll know in advance if your hotel offers laundry services.

Will I be able to shower? Do laundry?

Our packing list details various first-aid supplies to combat altitude sickness, sore throats, headaches, stomach aches and so on. If something more severe happens, we’ll take all necessary precautions to keep you safe and healthy. To ensure your safety and health, all participants are required to travel with an immunization health card. All trips also include Travelex Insurance which covers medical and dental emergencies. Please ask for a copy of our coverage to learn more.

What happens if I get sick on the trip?

You'll need a passport if you’re traveling internationally. Be sure that your passport is valid. If you need to get or renew a passport, allow for several months to do so. Also, be sure that your passport doesn’t expire for six months after your return and has at least three blank pages.

Do I need a passport? Do I need an international visa?

Yes, different immunizations are required for each country. Contact your local travel clinic or primary care physical for required immunizations.

Will I need to get any immunizations?

We keep a close eye on any potential health or safety risks in the areas where we travel. For a general overview, based on country, visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention here

Are there any health concerns I should be aware of in the countries we visit?

You’ll need foreign currency if you’re traveling internationally. You'll have the opportunity to exchange money once you’ve landed in your destination. It’s helpful to bring U.S. currency with you.

Do I need to bring foreign currency?

You can bring your cell phone, but we encourage using your trip as a time to disconnect as much as your life allows. Depending on the trip, it’s possible that wifi will be available.

Can I bring my cell phone?

At the hotels, you’ll have access to electricity but will need a power adapter and converter if you’re traveling internationally. Most hotels also have wifi available. If you’re climbing, you won’t have access to electricity or internet but can bring an optional backup energy source to charge items like your camera and phone.

Will I have access to electricity and Internet?

In most cases we create a trip blog where we can share photos and stories from your trip with friends and family at home. Our trip leaders will have cell phones with international plans. Our guides will have satellite phones in case of emergency.

How can I stay in touch with people at home?

When you arrive at the airport, a BEYOND representative will be there to greet you and provide transportation to your first destination.
