Day 9: Lobuche
Hiking time: 4-5 hours
Above Pheriche, the character of the terrain changes, and we’ll begin to understand the starkness of the high alpine landscape. Our path climbs the terminal moraine of the Khumbu glacier and continues to the settlement of Lobuche (16,174 ft./4,929 m), where we’ll spend one night. This trail passes through a famous memorial that honors the many Sherpa who lost their lives in the high mountains. Lobuche is located on the flank of an old lateral moraine of the Khumbu glacier.
Day 7 of EBC Trek
Daily Gratitude:
⁃ It was snowing this morning, but the weather turned to sunshine! We are grateful the snow and clouds cleared. We had more amazing views along our trekking route today. We got to see a couple new mountains that hadn’t been visible yet, and Lalit pointed out the direction of our trekking routes will be tomorrow and the next day. Lobuche tonight, EBC tomorrow!
Daily Highlights:
⁃ Today we walked through the “Climber’s Memorial,” which has hundreds of memorials for folks who died on the mountain. It was sobering and inspiring to see how their lives are being honored.
⁃ We made it to 16,000 feet! We’ll sleep at 16,108 ft. tonight and head to ~17,500 tomorrow at EBC!
Daily Reflections:
⁃ Tomorrow we’ll trek to Everest Base Camp! We are excited and we’re also feeling the thinner air. Prayers for the group’s safety and health are felt and appreciated!
