Day 4: Kathmandu, Nepal
A day of highs and lows. Today’s plan was to take a prop plane from Kathmandu to a small airport in Lukla where we would start our trek. Interestingly, the Lukla airport is rated the world’s most dangerous due to the short runway and mountains.
We arrived at the airport early and fired up to get going. Bad weather set in and the flight got delayed and delayed and delayed! It’s a tiny airport and we were hanging around with other trekkers from all over the world waiting and hoping for a break in the weather which would allow us to slip out. Chances are looking dim shortly after lunch then we get the news.
The outfitter Beyond uses in Nepal is the man in that world and has the use of helicopters. We feel like big dogs walking out of the little terminal to get in the helicopter!!! We get to the heli and Denied takeoff after all of that!!! Bummer. Weather too bad for the helicopter too.
We head back to our hotel in Kathmandu late afternoon to regroup and try again in the morning. We did end the day with a great pizza and wine at a cool spot in Kathmandu.
We haven’t even gotten to the mountain yet but the trip has been a really cool experience. We will see what tomorrow holds!!!
