Day 4: Palais de Rei to Melide
Melide – 14km – LUX Melide
Famous for it’s Octopus!!
—
Today, Friday, is Bob Benson’s 77th Birthday, so we began by singing “Happy Birthday” to Bob outside the Santa Mission church in Palais de Rei before commencing our journey.
We started a bit later today because the walk to Melide was considerably shorter than the previous two days - approximately 10 miles - and not nearly as difficult in elevation changes . It felt quite leisurely, and spirits were light and positive in our group. Along the way we stopped at a church in St Julien. After less than two hours we were at the half way point looking for a coffee stop. The first place we tried was incredibly busy, but, no problem, Manuel of course pointed us to Cafe Somoza a short distance further, which was almost empty. There we enjoyed a coffee and snack break next to a beautiful garden with interesting modern sculptures.
We crossed a Romanesque bridge to enter Melide, a good place for a group shot, and ended the walk with a fantastic meal at A Garnacha, where we all enjoyed local, fresh grilled octopus. We got to our hotel at 2:30, early enough to enjoy the town.
