Day 7: Climb to Barafu Camp
MOUNTAIN ROUTE OVERVIEW
As our climbers near the summit, they have another short day for acclimatization today. After breakfast, climbers leave Karanga Camp and make their way across moraine with a view of Mawenzi and Kibo to Barafu. The alpine desert terrain is full of boulders with lichen and moss. Upon reaching camp, climbers will spend the afternoon resting before packing for the summit and having an early dinner in preparation for their ascent to the summit to start at midnight. Summit begins at 5 PM EST!
MOUNTAIN ROUTE STATS
Starting elevation 13,300 feet
Ending elevation 16,000 feet
Elevation gain 2,700 feet
Distance hiked 3.5 miles
Average hiking time 4 to 5 hours
15,400 ft - I woke up early and took out my ears plugs. I was serenaded by the camp sounds of respiratory (and gastric) systems working hard to acclimate. The camp ultimately grumbled fully to life.
At breakfast, our easy camaraderie continued. We shared ailments and concerns, somehow made easier with the sharing. Overall confidence seems to remain.
The morning wind was strong and cold as it worked to give us a peekaboo view of the summit. The wind stayed with us all day. It kicked up dust we would rather have not had. That said, it never seemed to oppose us, at times almost seeming to push us toward our next camp.
John Simon once again showed his skill and experience, teaching us the “mountaineering step” right when we needed it. His humor, patience, and singing remain invaluable.
The views remain breathtaking. It’s been amazing to spend days above the clouds. The vast scale of this place is hard to comprehend. Being able to see camp doesn’t mean it’s close!
We’re now sitting at lunch at Barafu Camp. Our ultimate goal looms above us. Let the crushing begin!
