Day 6: Climb to Karanga Camp
THE WALL!!!!
Even saying it gets me so psyched! Last night, Gabriel told us we’d earned a little extra sleep and would start our climb around 9 a.m. We assumed this would help us avoid the crowds- but over breakfast, one glance upward proved otherwise. Nearly every other group had the same plan.
When we set off, the Barranco Wall quickly became a full-on traffic jam. What could have been frustrating turned into such pure fun for our group. We laughed, traded observations about the different climbing groups around us, and marveled (yet again) at the sheer strength and skill of the porters carrying heavy loads up such a steep, treacherous route.
Today was also the first day Willfredy was able to climb with us, and he came prepared: music. The soundtrack instantly set the tone, turning what had seemed like one of our most intimidating days into one of the most enjoyable. Step by step, with tunes playing and spirits high, we conquered the Wall so so well together. I would do this over any day of the week!!!
MOUNTAIN ROUTE OVERVIEW
After breakfast, one of the biggest challenges for our climbers begins. They’ll climb up and over the Great Barranco Wall. Getting to the top of it will take 1 to 2 hours. After the wall, climbers will cross a barren and rocky plateau with views of Kibo and three glaciers before descending into Karanga Camp. As they cross the plateau on a trail of gravel and sand, climbers will pass streams and giant boulders for 2 to 3 hours. As they walk into camp, they have a good view of tomorrow’s route. They’ll get to camp by lunch. But this short day is planned for resting which helps with acclimatization.
