Day 6 - Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

UPDATE FROM OUR TEAM

Day 4 on-mountain brought lots of laughs and not a few “pole poles” (or “Chipotle potle”). The crew absolutely dominated the intimidating Baranco Wall, a steep vertical climb (at points a 70 degree incline) early in the morning. We then trekked up to about 14,200 feet where the views were amazing and the Uhuru Summit loomed directly above us. After a brief photo shoot, the team trekked back down to about 13,500 feet to make camp at the legendary Karanga Camp. A much needed lunch of tomato soup and pizza left everyone feeling content and ready to enjoy some down time for the rest of the afternoon. As Reb read her book, Rostan and Tom enjoyed some backgammon while Scott, Rhonda, and Rusty took care of the team journal. After another lovely hot dinner the crew retired to their tents to prepare for the trek to base camp tomorrow!

MOUNTAIN ROUTE OVERVIEW

After breakfast, one of the biggest challenges for our climbers begins. They’ll climb up and over the Great Barranco Wall. Getting to the top of it will take 1 to 2 hours. After the wall, climbers will cross a barren and rocky plateau with views of Kibo and three glaciers before descending into Karanga Camp. As they cross the plateau on a trail of gravel and sand, climbers will pass streams and giant boulders for 2 to 3 hours. As they walk into camp, they have a good view of tomorrow’s route. They’ll get to camp by lunch. But this short day is planned for resting which helps with acclimatization!
