Day 1: The Journey Begins to Tanzania

Today marks the beginning of an incredible journey! Almost all of our travelers have arrived in Arusha, Tanzania. Similar to Mount Kilimanjaro, which comprises of three volcano cones, Mount Meru is also a dormant volcano and stands at 14,968 ft. Let’s hope our climbers have good weather on Mount Kilimanjaro because on a clear day, you can see Mount Meru from Mount Kilimanjaro which is 43 miles west! Keep an eye on this trip journal! We’ll be posting everyday from now until the end of the trip!

Our Kilimanjaro adventure has begun…

We left our homes and families behind in Jackson MS, Colorado Springs CO, Detroit MI.

Our groups from the US merged in Amsterdam and we have since arrived safely from our 8+ hour flight to Kilimanjaro International Airport. We experienced no real issues with Customs or Baggage and we were welcomed by a fantastic local Beyond/YL team: including Chris, Ocho, Abraham and fellow climber and YL staff from Malawi, Zein.

Motion sickness and all our travels continue now in a shuttle bus to the hotel in Arusha.

The guys are eager to get settled, get a shower, and get some food upon arrival. Shout out to Michael Miller for the upgraded airline experience that I had to today! Beyond grateful. It’s dark now so we are excited to rise early tomorrow morning and get our first look at the mountain that awaits.

Thank you Jesus for your protection today and may you continue to provide the perfect path and plan for the ascent ahead.
