Walk to Portomarin – 22.5 km [14 Miles]

Bring your bags to Hotel Lobby and Breakfast at the hotel. Expect a calm walk through pretty villages and peaceful hamlets under the shade of oak trees and along quiet country roads. Along the way, you will spot many Galician traditional ‘hórreos’ (granaries). Local Dinner in Town!

Day One on the Camino: Sarria to Portomarín 🇪🇸🥾

Today, we officially began our Camino journey, leaving Sarria behind and walking 22.5 kilometers (14 miles) to Portomarín.

Our morning began with mild temperatures and a peaceful blanket of fog covering the countryside. We made our way along quiet country roads, through charming villages and peaceful hamlets, often shaded by beautiful oak trees. The scenery was quintessentially rural Galicia—green pastures, stone homes, rolling hills, and nature everywhere we looked.

Along the way, we spotted plenty of local residents—cows (including some impressive longhorns!), friendly dogs and cats, and all kinds of wildlife. There was something special about the pace of the day: walking together, taking in the scenery, sharing conversation, and simply enjoying being present in the countryside.

We also made several stops along the way to collect stamps for our Camino passports. Each stop offered a little glimpse into the local community, and it was fun seeing the unique stamps from the different villages and places we passed along the route. Each one is becoming a small memento of our journey.

We stopped for lunch at a wonderful restaurant overlooking a beautiful pasture—a perfect place to pause, refuel, and take in the view.

Tonight, our group gathered for dinner locally in Portomarín, sharing stories and celebrating the accomplishment of our first day on the trail. Afterward, we wandered up to the town square, explored the shops, and took in the historic church and beautiful surroundings.

14 miles down, and the Camino is officially underway! We’re tired, happy, and already looking forward to what tomorrow brings.
